03 — Export process

From nursery to container

Live plants are demanding cargo. This is how a Zeniva Serala consignment moves from the shade house to the container, in five steps.

  1. Rows of tropical plants in wooden crates inside a Zeniva Serala shade house

    Step 01 / 05

    Grown in Sri Lanka

Raised under shade net in the island's own climate (humidity, light and warmth) at our nursery in Negombo, then hand-selected for the consignment.

  2. A worker hand-grading potted plants among export crates in the nursery

    Step 02 / 05

    Inspection & grading

Plants are checked by hand and graded by size. Each export consignment is then issued a phytosanitary certificate by Sri Lanka's National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS).

  3. Timber crates of tropical plants beside a shipping container, ready for export

    Step 03 / 05

    Export crating

Plants are sorted by line and packed into slatted timber crates, each crate labelled with its size grade.

  4. Export crates of plants loaded inside a shipping container

    Step 04 / 05

    Loading & documents

The crates are stacked and loaded into the container, and the export and phytosanitary documents are prepared for the consignment.

  5. A loaded shipping container on its trailer outside the packing shed

    Step 05 / 05

    Dispatch

Consignments leave by sea or air for buyers abroad; we also deliver to buyers across Sri Lanka, with acclimatisation guidance.

All five photos come from a real Zeniva Serala export consignment.

06 — 6 questions buyers ask

Importing, answered

Straight answers to what buyers ask before they request a quotation.

Not covered here?

Ask us directly
Which countries can you ship to?

We can quote for most destinations. Tell us where the plants are going: the freight mode, documents and timing depend on that country's import rules. Our consignment of 13,000+ plants to Malé, Maldives, went by sea, containerised.

How are the plants packed for shipping?

Plants are hand-inspected, graded by size and packed by species into timber export crates, prepared for the freight mode and the destination. The crates travel with the phytosanitary certificate and the export documents for the shipment.

Does each export consignment have a phytosanitary certificate?

Yes. Plants are hand-inspected before packing, and every export consignment travels with a phytosanitary certificate issued by Sri Lanka's National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS), together with the export documents for the shipment.

Do you supply buyers in Sri Lanka?

Yes. We supply buyers within Sri Lanka as well as for export. Build a quote list the same way and give your Sri Lankan delivery address as the destination.

How do quantities and payment work?

Quantities are agreed per enquiry: they depend on the species, sizes and destination. You send a request with the plants, sizes and quantities you need, and we reply with a tailored quotation. Payment is by bank transfer. There is no online payment on this site.

How long does a quotation take, and what are lead times?

We reply to each request by email. Lead times depend on the species, sizes and volume, and on the phytosanitary inspection before shipment. They are confirmed in your quotation.
